Ports on the Rio de la Plata, a 180 mile river that flows through Uruguay and Argentina, include the Port of Buenos Aires, the Port of La Plata and the Port of Dock Sud.

If you are shipping personal items and household goods to Argentina and you are an Argentinian citizen returning to the country after having been living abroad for a year or more, you may qualify for duty free shipping. It is also expected that you have not visited the country for than 60 cumulative days during the previous year prior to arrival. Please note that the Argentinian customs officer will check entry and exit stamp dates.

If you are not a citizen of Argentina but you have a Permanent Resident Visa in Argentina and have no visited the country for more than 69 days during the 12 months prior to your arrival, you may also qualify for duty free shipping. Again, please note, customs officials will be looking at entry and exit stamp dates for verification purposes.

If you have a Temporary Resident Visa but are not a citizen of Argentina, you may import household goods and personal items to Argentina on a temporary basis. You should plan to sign a guarantee with the Customs officials in Argentina. When you leave Argentina, if you are not a citizen of the country, you must plan to leave with the same goods that you arrived in Argentina with, otherwise you will be expected to pay duty fees. The exception to that is if you obtain a Permanent Resident Visa in Argentina while you are in the country.

When you are shipping cargo to Argentina, when you arrive in Argentina, you must verbally declare to the Migrations officer in Argentina that you are expecting “Unaccompanied Baggage” to arrive in the country. Please note that the Argentinian customs officer may write this information on your passport.

Unaccompanied baggage shipped to Argentina must arrive in the country within six months of your arrival in Argentina.

Based on the rules documented above, you can ship used household goods and used personal items to Argentina without paying customs duties. New items including unused household goods are subject to import duty fees of around 50%.
